Helsinki weather is classified as maritime continental, its disposition being a direct result of its northerly positioning. Helsinki’s closeness to the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Sea creates chilling weather conditions, which are counteracted by the warmer airflow brought in by the Gulf Stream.

Summer Weather in Helsinki
Helsinki weather is summer is predominantly pleasantly cool and bright, with an abundant amount of sunlight during the daytime. Around mid June Finland’s capital enjoys its longest day of the year, with the sun gracing the horizon for 19 hours. June through to August sees daily temperatures hover between 19 °C and 21 °C, and at this time there is an abundant amount of greenery. Helsinki weather is influenced by the sea so summer daily temperatures are cooler, but evening temperatures are higher further into the mainland. As the days begin to shorten towards September, temperatures cool down significantly.

Winter Weather in Helsinki
Helsinki weather is lengthy with freezing temperatures and a rich amount of snowfall. The winter season begins as November rolls in and lasts until mid April. By this time the weather is at freezing point, snowfall has blanketed the city and the sea itself freezes over. Average temperatures are - 4°C in January and December, the coldest month is February -7.9°C. Helsinki’s latitude means daylight is less than six hours in winter, and the very overcast weather at this time of year draws attention to the darkness.

The impressive Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis that can often be seen in Northern Finland make an appearance in Helsinki.

Spring
Helsinki weather in spring is warmer and usually arrives mid April. As the days grow longer and warmer the city starts to fill with visitors and the trees and flowers begin to bloom.
